Mt. Rushmore: Trial By Fire

That's ~45 feet of excellent rock that you see in the picture. Orion's idea to climb next to Mt. Rushmore was fun (we climbed the north park of Mt. Rushmore). Not your typical Mt. Rushmore visit!

Orion went first as our group's lead climber. He mapped our route (roughly a 5.8 in climber's parlance) and successfully made it up the ~45 foot face. Not too tough for him.

Then it was my turn. I was up to the task and the view up top was amazing. You could see the entire park and it was pretty windy up there. In a way, it was like climbing my own little Mount Everest (you know, minus the oxygen tank, parka, and ceremonial flag plant).

Then it was Elizabeth's shot at glory. She'd been climbing only once before so this route was a trial by fire. She did well and made it up 3/4 of the route. She got cheese-gratered though... her legs are pretty scratched up.

Well, we all had fun climbing on this beautiful day (it's 70 degrees) and we're about to drive Needle's highway. It's roughly a 15 mile loop that promises to be beautiful. We'll stop on the loop for lunch and then it's off to our next destination. Stay tuned,
